Chapter 6

Smoke hadn’t told anyone his real name in a long time. No one currently on Alpha Team knew it. No one on Alpha Team cared, and it only opened liabilities. If they were captured by the authorities, by someone like Gin, they wouldn’t be able to tell someone anything they didn’t know. It had been Smoke’s idea, a legacy from his time living on the streets.

And here he’d gone and blurted out his real name to Gin like it wasn’t going to come back and bite him in the ass. Because those eyes, those lips, those hands—they all did a number on Smoke, and he didn’t even want to bother hiding it anymore. It wasn’t even just his looks, either. Gin was a guy who, after surviving something terrible, actually regretted that he hadn’t found a way to save others. He legitimately believed he owed safety and redemption to the world, and he was going to give it to them.

And Smoke? Smoke believed in saving people, sure. It was a big part of his life. It wasn’t his entire life, though. He had other things going on. Alpha Team were his friends and his colleagues. He wasn’t ever lonely, and something in him cried out that Gin had to be alone like this.

“I like it out here.” Gin spoke up as he did what he could to tidy up the cabin. “It’s peaceful, you know? I feel bad for enjoying it, and I know I’m going to go stir crazy by the time the night is over. But how often do we get to go for this long without training or fighting?”

“Got that right.” Smoke stretched and eyed his companion. They couldn’t have any kind of a future. All things considered—like the fact that Gin would have to arrest Smoke someday—a future together was pretty much impossible. At the same time, Smoke wanted. And he’d always been the kind of guy to find a way to victory instead of denying himself what he needed. “It’s like everything we left behind in New York magically doesn’t exist anymore.”

“Wouldn’t that be nice?” Gin caught himself immediately. “Not that I’d want to leave the team. Not ever.”

“Of course not.” Smoke held back a sigh, because he didn’t think the team would be heartbroken and they definitely didn’t deserve Gin. “But leaving behind all the megalomaniacs with super powers?”

“If I could I’d do it in a heartbeat.” Gin headed back over to the bed and sat back down. Smoke could see the outline of his abs, and the little trail of hair disappearing into his waistband. “What is it about New York and homicidal Alters? It’s like the city is a magnet for them.”

“Every comic book every one of them ever read as a kid had the supervillain heading to New York. It’s programmed into them. They probably don’t even know why they’re doing it.” Smoke laughed. “But hey, I’ve got a way we can manage that whole stir crazy thing if you want.
