Chapter 6
Smoke hadnât told anyone his real name in a long time. No one currently on Alpha Team knew it. No one on Alpha Team cared, and it only opened liabilities. If they were captured by the authorities, by someone like Gin, they wouldnât be able to tell someone anything they didnât know. It had been Smokeâs idea, a legacy from his time living on the streets.
And here heâd gone and blurted out his real name to Gin like it wasnât going to come back and bite him in the ass. Because those eyes, those lips, those handsâthey all did a number on Smoke, and he didnât even want to bother hiding it anymore. It wasnât even just his looks, either. Gin was a guy who, after surviving something terrible, actually regretted that he hadnât found a way to save others. He legitimately believed he owed safety and redemption to the world, and he was going to give it to them.
And Smoke? Smoke believed in saving people, sure. It was a big part of his life. It wasnât his entire life, though. He had other things going on. Alpha Team were his friends and his colleagues. He wasnât ever lonely, and something in him cried out that Gin had to be alone like this.
âI like it out here.â Gin spoke up as he did what he could to tidy up the cabin. âItâs peaceful, you know? I feel bad for enjoying it, and I know Iâm going to go stir crazy by the time the night is over. But how often do we get to go for this long without training or fighting?â
âGot that right.â Smoke stretched and eyed his companion. They couldnât have any kind of a future. All things consideredâlike the fact that Gin would have to arrest Smoke somedayâa future together was pretty much impossible. At the same time, Smoke wanted. And heâd always been the kind of guy to find a way to victory instead of denying himself what he needed. âItâs like everything we left behind in New York magically doesnât exist anymore.â
âWouldnât that be nice?â Gin caught himself immediately. âNot that Iâd want to leave the team. Not ever.â
âOf course not.â Smoke held back a sigh, because he didnât think the team would be heartbroken and they definitely didnât deserve Gin. âBut leaving behind all the megalomaniacs with super powers?â
âIf I could Iâd do it in a heartbeat.â Gin headed back over to the bed and sat back down. Smoke could see the outline of his abs, and the little trail of hair disappearing into his waistband. âWhat is it about New York and homicidal Alters? Itâs like the city is a magnet for them.â
âEvery comic book every one of them ever read as a kid had the supervillain heading to New York. Itâs programmed into them. They probably donât even know why theyâre doing it.â Smoke laughed. âBut hey, Iâve got a way we can manage that whole stir crazy thing if you want.
